When buying a translation, provide the translator not only with the actual text but also with specific instructions concerning the intended readers and the purpose of the translation (e.g. for publication or for information only).
If you wish to project an international image you will be better served by commissioning professional translators rather than attempting a translation in-house. In many cultures awkward or sloppy use of the local language – especially by a non-native speaker – is considered insulting rather than amusing.
Aim for a long-term working relationship with your translation service provider (after all, you don’t change your accountant after each financial year). A conscientious translator will take an interest in your company’s issues and over time will draw up a customer-specific terminology. In this way it is possible to ensure a uniform use of specialised terms.
